The Social Services Community Center offers a vast array of poverty-relief programs that provide all the basic human needs vital to day-to-day survival. The center is dedicated to relieving the poverty by taking a holistic and humanitarian approach with the underlying goal of lifting the needy out of poverty and into self-sufficiency.
Feeding Program and Emergency Food Bank:
Nutritionally balanced hot meals served to the needy. Volunteers collect food donations from area supermarkets, faith institutions, schools, businesses. Boxes containing a nutritionally balanced emergency supply of food for an entire family is provided to local recipients.
Clothing Center for Families:
New and slightly used clothes, shoes, blankets and small household items donated by the retail stores and individuals is made available in a retail store setting, free of charge to local community members. Needy clients are also given a complete outfit for job interviews.
Free Internet Access and Library:
The designated area for Internet services and library offers 12 internet computer work stations, books and other multi media materials for community use on first come first serve basis.
Employment Support, Job Training Center:
Employment Specialist help individuals and families to free themselves from the poverty cycle by developing their ability to make choices that will lead to a better life. Employment Service programs in partnership with “People Helping People in Need” a state contracted non-profit agency, provides assistance to primarily low-skilled and unskilled clients seeking jobs.
Social Services Counseling Programs:
Chemical Dependence Specialist from “People Helping People in Need” provide the necessary counseling for a continuum of care to address the needs of persons having a history of Chemical Dependence or being at risk of Chemical Dependence and /or MICA (Mental Illness Chemical Abuse), Substance Abuse/Co-occurring issues.
Information and Referral Services:
The Center offers referrals to and information about appropriate public and private assistance programs and agencies.
Charity Incubator Project:
The project is providing support and experienced leadership skills to create a local charitable organization to take over the operation of the Our Place Newark. The project will provide to the newly created charitable organization mentoring, coaching, support in developing leadership skills, giving support and guidance for the challenges and decisions faced on a day-to-day basis.
